Boardman Aquatic and Recreation Center

Boardman, OR

: This $13M CM-GC project involved new construction of a 41,000 SF recreation and aquatic center on a 7-acre undeveloped site. The project features an indoor pool with zero depth entry, lazy river, and lap swimming, as well as a therapy pool. Additional features include two high school sized gymnasiums with bleachers, an indoor track, fitness center, exercise/aerobics room, climbing wall, expandable multi-purpose rooms with dividing wall, locker rooms, concession room, and offices.  Site work included mass excavation, new infrastructure, stormwater retention, asphalt and concrete paving, and sidewalks.

Absher’s team was led by our experienced project management crew who are accustomed to the challenging weather conditions encountered in Eastern Oregon. In preparation, our team weatherized the building early by installing temporary walls in the openings, to allow sheetrock and taping to proceed and keep conditions dry. We also utilized insulated blankets to heat the ground sufficiently for shotcrete to proceed, despite the extended severe winter weather. Extremely windy conditions present another challenge for pouring concrete. Our team met the challenge of keeping the gym slab pour properly hydrated for curing in these conditions by keeping water on it for a week, rather than the typical one-day timeframe. Our crew’s expertise and preparation for the conditions allowed these important scopes to continue despite an unusually severe winter.
